She polishes the last of the glasses, hung in neat little rows over the bar. Checks the bottles lined up behind her, hundreds of them in all shapes, sizes, and planet of origin. Makes sure the taps are fresh and ready to go, and that the blood warmer is set to body temperature (cuz those pesky Vamps hate cold blood).

She looks at the clocks on the wall, set to every time zone (plus a few of the most well-traveled planets and alternate realities). Almost time to open.

Plenty of places to sit. Plenty of food to share. She hopes that all writers of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Spec Fic (plus anyone else who happens to swing by from time to time) feels at home. Able to let their hair down, talk about their day, and just chill. Support each other.

A bell dings. Opening Time!

*

So there ya have it, folks! YA has their Random Musings thread. TIO has the Landfill. They've got Sunshine Cafe's and Comedy Cabaret's, but now there's....um....this new little unnamed corner of the world.

The "must pertain to the writing of SF/F" rule doesn't apply here. It's a place for folks to be folks. Chat about your WIP, your awful day at work, how much you want a light saber of your very own. I may occasionally merge OT threads here, but for the most part, it's a safe haven for Off Topic conversation.

As for the name, I'm taking suggestions. And then there will be a poll. So far, we've got:

QUARK'S BAR
CALLAHAN'S CROSSTIME SALOON
COWBOY FENG'S SPACE BAR & GRILL
TEN-FORWARD
MOS EISLEY CANTINA

Adding:
The Prancing Pony
C.H.A.O.S. - Cantina for the Haven of Aliens and Other Species
Chaos Alternate Parallel Future Spec World. CAPFSW
The Black Hole
The Restaurant at The End of [The Universe] [Cyberspace] [The Interwebs] [The Internets]
Fred
Ten-Backward
Ten-Posterior
Al Gore's House
Al Gore's alternative prancing posterior at the end of the black hole
Light Sabers & Magic Wands
Universal Planet
Planet Universal
Far Far Away
Once Upon A SFF
42
Portal 42, Destination Earth
ETA: Estimated Time of Arrival
Munden's Bar
The Bar
Watering Hole
Millenium Falcon
Centurion Hawk
Morley's
The Time Lords' Pub
The Mended Drum
Biers
C.H.A.O.S. Tavern

Mix and match 'em, or come up with something new. Let's give this new hangout a name!

ChaosTitan

I'm for C.H.A.O.S....is this Haven going to be a giant thread or a subforum? I vote for a subforum. I find any thread over 100 posts to be disturbing.

Thread.

I'm determined to start one that goes over a hundred posts. :D

My husband has a compressed workweek, so our weekend normally runs Fri-Sun. On the other hand, he leaves here at 3:15 in the afternoon and comes home roughly 12 hours later. It has its downsides.

There are some distinct disadvantages to living in the country. I meandered into the bathroom, picking up dirty clothes to wash and found a scorpion. They do like to come inside the house when it starts cooling off in the Fall. My husband captured it with a pair of pliers and tested its swimming abilities. They don't swim well.

Dudes! New thread! Like whoa!

Just came back from a rockin 8 hour wedding of an old high school buddy in Oregon. Said buddy was the groom. The highlight of the weekend, and I think you will all agree:

Kitty: (inside her head) Wow, the groom has like a really cool outfit on, doesn't he?

Kitty's best friend/wedding date: Is he dressed exactly like David Tennant Doctor Who on purpose?

Kitty, in a brief moment of grabbing the groom's attention: I have been requested to inquire as to whether you are dressed like David Tennant Doctor Who intentionally?

Groom, dressed like Doctor Who: YES! ISN'T IT AWESOME?

*High fives exchanged all around in honor of wedding joy and Doctor Who being awesome*

I will put up a picture for you to be impressed by later. The bride was dressed slightly more conventionally in a white wedding dress and big brown work boots, as we were on an extremely muddy farm.

Well DM'ed, dempsey.

Did you pull the old DM trick of rolling a whole bunch of dice behind the screen, frowning, saying "That's not good", then looking at your players and telling them "Oh, it's nothing. Nothing to worry about."

Then flashing an evil smile.

Actually, I pointed at the guy who was playing a warlord and said, "I'm going to kill you in this game."

And then I did.

Yeah. That's a lot better than sitting through a three hour game session with 90% of it consisting of the DM making out with his girlfriend.

Or starting to kill her off and then changing his mind when she throws a hissy fit.

And there was the player we had who obviously didn't understand that the DM was in charge of the game and would announce things like "I walk into the room and immediately notice something is different."

Kidding. I'm kidding. I played for a little while--about a month--when I was stationed in a very boring observation post with some techie nerds I was in the army with. I wasn't much into it, to be honest, but like someone here, making characters was the most interesting part, and it made me start exploring the craft of writing more. I am not a coffee drinker, but I've been drinking a lot of tea at my new job. Not because I need the caffeine, but because it's so cold at my desk area that I need something to warm up them bones :(
Tea is also goodness. I'm using Coffee Times in a more generalized, hot beverage celebratory fashion.

Off to go do that.

So I'm working on my WIP, and I wonder if this has happened to anyone else. Have you ever written a villain whose ideals are, in your own mind, horribly twisted and wrong, but you can imagine that somewhere out there will be someone who reads your book and thinks that the villain has the right idea? Not so much a Draco in Leather Pants (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DracoInLeatherPants), but actually agreeing with his philosophy?

I have remembered to bring in mint tea from home today, so I don't have to rely on plain ol' Lipton Tea that they provide in the staff room. Lipton Tea is okay and all, but it doesn't taste good to me unless I put a lot of sugar in.

Also, they have installed a second refrigerator in the lunch room, I guess since the first one got too crowded with people's lunches? I know this because the first refrigerator had a sign on it this morning:

"2nd Frig in Lunchroom" o.O

Speaking of hilarious typos, I was putting together the cafeteria menu for next week (since that's part of my new job description). I got to "Beef Kabobs with Pita" and was sorely tempted to write "Beef Kabobs with Pity" just to see who would notice.

I think I agree that it's coffee times. My office is quite lousy--no hot water, no toaster, no coffee machine. Someone brought their own toaster in but it's not for general usage. I wouldn't mind even chipping in a few dollars a week for coffee and sugar and creamer if they feel the need to be that cheap. There are like 25 people in my office, I cannot be the only one who needs coffee times.

Rant over. I am horribly tired. We have to make a noise complaint I think, as someone evil is moving construction equipment to and fro at 5:40 am which I'm pretty sure is illegal. Morning, all! Pumpkin ginger tea today. Actually pretty good.

One of my favorite "typo" stories: When I was in high school, my best friend and I painted murals on some of the science classroom walls. One of the murals was a periodic table of the elements that took up almost the entire wall of the chemistry classroom. Some other students had started it a few years before but never finished, so my friend and I volunteered to finish it. We worked out a system where she stencilled the letters & numbers in the boxes and I painted them.

So one day after school I was busy painting letters and I realized that on two of the elements (Calcium <Ca> and Sodium <Na> ) she'd accidentally reversed the stencils for the "a" in each. After we laughed about it, we decided to paint them as-is with the backward a's. Then we waited.

Weeks later, we had people making fun of the backwards a's. Our response was yes, they're backward, took you long enough to notice, now didn't it? :D
