I hope this is the right place to ask this question. I got my first request for a partial on Friday, the only problem is that the agent asked that I send it as a word doc attachment. I didn’t think this would be a problem until I go into Microsoft works and realise that all my files are .wps. I have no idea how I can make it into a .doc. I have windows xp and I use Microsoft works word processor. If anyone has any ideas how I can make my file into a .doc I would really, really appreciate it.

Save the file using 'save as' under the 'file' drop down in works. When the window to save opens up, type in a name to save the file as and then click on the drop down menu and pick 'doc' for the file extension. It will be saved with the new name and as a 'doc' file.

Dependant upon how old your version of Works is, the "drop down - Save As" may not work.

If not, get back to us. "Vee haff udder vays..." :)

Thank-you for your help. I’ve never noticed the save as drop down thingy before, I feel so stupid. It did give me the option of saving it as a .doc but there are a number of different variations. There’s Word 6.0/95 (*.doc), Word 97-2000 & 6.0/95-RTF (*.doc) Word Perfect 5.0 (*.doc) etc. Is there a particular one that’s the right one. Also when I save it as a .doc it now looks like Wordpad, is that right?

I would go for the Word 97-2000 option. When you say it looks like Wordpad, do you mean the icon of the file? If so, that probably just means .doc files are set up to open in Wordpad by default on your computer, which isn't anything to worry about :)

The 97-2000 is probably the safe option. And yeah, if you use Works, MS is going to want to try to open it as a Wordpad document.

You may want to send it to a friend who uses Word first, before doing the "big send", just to make sure the formatting stays correct.

You may also want to consider looking into Open Office later. (free word processing suite, like MS Office, except .. free.)
