Fish Appreciation Thread

I wish I was a-fishing now. ;-)
I don't really have a favorite fish, but that's something majestic about trout in a clear mountain steam.
At the office park where I work there's a fairly large lake. We used to go out at lunchtime and feed the catfish, carp, and turtles. Also, the ducks, geese, and swans.

I do appreciate fish. It's just that the first ones I ever got to know, um...personally...did not much appreciate me. And for good reason. I was a noob elementary teacher all of 21 years old, and I thought that they would be fine during Christmas break if I just sprinkled an extra healthy dose of fish food in the aquarium before turning out the lights.
My fellow 4th grade teacher (who soon became my principal) helped me deal with the carnage in January. To his credit he never told me how stupid I was. An amazing person, teacher, and principal.
And so today I still find fish can be appetizing in certain scenarios. My favs are sea bass and salmon. Anytime, any place.

I like jumping fish, big ones that soar up and up and up, their lashing tails seeming to propel them aloft; each jump is different, the scene fleeting and unreal, a bolt of lightening seen in reverse as water sprays in all directions and follows the streak of silver until gravity betrays the climb and the fish falls back to earth, slapping the surface and causing a huge depression as if a meteor had shot from the sky.
This is what the initial take-off looks like, in this case a tarpon my friend hooked while I watched. Pretty cool, eh?

I like dolphin. They taste great. The pelagic ones, not the cetacean ones.
I also like the incredible Mr. Limpet. Don't know how he tastes.

This one, a hammerhead, had the nerve to steal a tarpon right off of my friend's line as I stood idly by with a camera. You can see part of the doomed fish to the left of the image, above where the shark's "hammer" would be. The tarpon was as big as a full grown man, about six feet, while the shark was nearly twenty feet long and as big around as a Chevy Tahoe. No kidding.

At work we have magnets with a pic and our names on them to indicate which patients we are responsible for. Dori is my pic and "Just keep swimming," is the reason why. So, it's not unusual for me to answer to "Hey! Blue Fish, your patient is puking!". Just a little fishy trivia.

I like clown fish too, they are just adorable. I had clown fish when my tank was a reef tank, with corals, shrimp, crabs, starfish...the whole shebang. Then I went through a divorce and gave the tank and everything inside to a friend. The inhabitants got put into a much larger tank, and the friend gave the tank back to me, and have since turned it into a planted freshwater tank with some cory cats, rainbows and such. A planted tank, though somewhat cheaper to care for, is much harder to take care of than when it was saltwater. My biggest battle is algae. I'm about ready to throw out the algae infested plants and get artificial ones, and trade off the power compacts for some plain ol' fluorescents. Now, if I had a CO2 injection set up, then that would help solve the algae, but I don't want to mess with that.
