How do you describe the facial expressions and body language of characters other than your POV character? Of course, it's easy to use internal thoughts to show the feelings of the POV character, but how do you 'show' the feelings of the people they're interacting with. In RL conversation I'm constantly reading all these super-subtle clues from the people I'm talking to, but I can't figure out how to describe these in my writing. Honestly, I can't point to a single obvious sign with a lot of the more subtle expressions/body language. I can just 'tell' when my friends are worried or happy or annoyed or whatever.
I'm ending up with a lot of lines like 'He looked at her with a mixture of confusion and fear' in my books and I don't like it. I know a look of confusion and fear when I see it, but haven't the slightest clue how to describe it.
