Hell, I'm still using Panther, lol. I know everything works with my current OS. Why would I want to update?

I would never adopt a new OS within its first 6 months of being available.

Eh. I'd say that about Windows, based on past experience, but I've been an early user of every OS X release since I switched. While none of them have been perfect they've all been quite usable. I wouldn't necessarily suggest it for a casual user but I would to anyone who's slightly more comfortable with the OS.

I haven't picked up Snow Leopard yet, but I plan to the next time I'm out. It's extremely well-priced, given it's a major release.

I like my Mac just the way it is.
I use Word for Mac to write,
surf with safari, and edit my photos
with I-photo. It plays DVD's, has a
great dictionary, and I get all my mail
without problems, that's what
I use the computer for.
Simple.

I avoid safari updates!

So sayeth a Windows user.

Thanks, Ben, this answered some of my questions. Open Office and Scrivener were my primary concerns.

Couple of things about Snow Leopard.

Even if you've installed OS X and updates thousands of times, read the Readme. The Installer is different. Archive and Install is no longer an option, it's the default.

Some functions will require you to use Disk Utiility--use the one on the DVD.

It's faster and apps are smaller; don't panic when you see you have more space.

I remember having a 500MB hard drive. That's half a gig! (Insert "uphill in the snow both ways" joke here.)

Well, I have no burning desire to upgrade right now but when I upgrade to a laptop it might come in handy. As long as it's compatible with celtx and whatever script writing, music recording and video software that I will need on said laptop. I'm so happy with OSX Tiger it's ridiculous.

Oh, and, if you boot from the DVD, you can use Disk Utility to erase the hard drive and perform a clean install from the $29* "upgrade".

*$49 for the five-license family pack.

Jay - "Tell me about it...not sure I could make it without Scrivener!"

So, why do you like it so much better than using Word/folders?

Lots of reasons, I spose. Since it saves into a project file and not a text file you have a lot more flexibility with how you break up the material. I currently have it broken down into Section ---> Chapter ---> Scene and can freely flick back and forth without delay, and when everything is done it will autocompile the whole thing into a single file of my choice and preformat it for querying if I wish. Another cool thing about keeping your work saved as a project means it can also hold any video, audio, image, or text related reference material inside the the same file as your work, so you can have easy access to that as well.

Plenty of other features, like built in corkboards and outlines (again, all under the same roof), and the "Full Screen" mode which blacks out your screen except for your writing page for a less distracting environment.

I guess it's the ease and simplicity. Nothing I listed above can't be done in Word with some organization and such, but it also can't be done as easily either.

I remember the ooo's and aaahhh's when Mac upped the G3's drive to 6GB.
lol I remember that too.

I used a G3 iMac with a 6gb HD for many years. It was extra-special because it had a DVD player back when DVDs were new and cool.

I'm talking from a professional perspective where you have to manage a studio full of Macs, all using third-party software which in turn have to run other third-party plug-ins and extensions.

When you get all that running smoothly, you don't go easily changing to a major OS update just to get some fancy new widgets.

I'm not getting Snow Leopard just yet. It's not because I'm concerned about problems. I have a 1TB Time Capsule for backups, and still have my copy of Leopard, so I can just restore from backup. However, I'm unemployed and have to pinch my pennies until I get another day job.

By the end of my first day on my Scrivener trial, I was fully converted. It's one of the best things I've found for writing.

I'm still on Tiger, but I'm hoping to get a new Mac with Snow Leopard sometime in early 2010 (need to put money aside). One of the things I'm most looking forward to is having Time Machine.

I quickly tried to install the new update while at the in-laws. I was borrowing my brother-in-laws copy :)

Of course, in my rush (I was also trying to get dinner for the triplets), I put the computer down on a bed during the install. Naturally it overheated, and shutdown.

Not able to turn it back on, I tried a bunch of stuff, before ejecting the CD. Then all I had was a blinking question-mark folder. I could only think of all the writing I hadn't yet backed up...

So finally I got it to finish the installation, and got a "failed install" notice. So I crossed my fingers and tried it again. Luckily it worked. Moral of the story - take your time with the install :)

I installed Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro because I know Scrivener is compatible. It's definitely lighter and faster--especially Safari. However, I won't let it near my iMac. I'm working on a large video project and I know if I install Snow Leopard it will break Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio. Apple OS updates are notorious for breaking pro apps.
