London. Then NYC. Now London
Awesome British sitcom for you - 'Red Dwarf'.

I've loved it for twenty years and the other great thing is the books that are based on it. Not just adaptations, but stand alone books. Enjoy

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace

Brass Eye

A lot of people like The IT Crowd. It co-stars Richard Ayoade from Darkplace, and Christopher Morris from Brass Eye has a supporting role, so it should be good. Haven't seen it myself.
Wasn't too thrilled with The IT Crowd. All of the "computer geeks who are still virgins and live with their parents" jokes laid out in a sitcom format. Pfeh.

The set-up for Darkplace couldn't be sustained for more than 10 minutes, I thought.

But I did laugh my @$$ off over Look Around You. Priceless.

Something old or new? If old, I recommend Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em. Hilarious. Riotous. Brilliant.

Ditto Red Dwarf. It's nothing short of genius. Books are great too.

And "The Young Ones". It's from the early 80s, but it's out on DVD in the US. It's hilarious.

If you have a REALLY weird sense of humor, 'The Mighty Boosh' is a strange british comedy show which is airing on US tv now.

Oh yes! Red Dwarf, brilliant!

fairly new series I've enjoyed:
Free Agents
20 things to do before you're 30
The Inbetweeners - quite puerile but very, very funny.
Coupling - billed as the English 'friends' but with more sex and snarkiness
Two Pints Of lager And A Packet Of Crisps - again, quite puerile but funny
My Family
Dinnerladies
Absolutely Fabulous
Vicar Of Dibley

see if any of those take your fancy!

Beat me to it. Also, a lot of Young Ones episodes have subliminal messages spliced in them. No kidding. I don't know that I caught them all, but one was a white bird in flight. No idea what it was supposed to mean, but I thought it was cool.

Probably my favourite UK sitcom of recent times has been Peep Show.

It's probably reached its shelf-life now, but has been darkly disturbingly brilliant for 5 (I think) series.

Favourite sit com of all time, though, is Arrested Development.
Definite slow burner, but once you're immersed in it, every line, every frame, is an absolute killer.

It got canned after 2 and a half series' so it was one of those preserved gems that never hung around long enough to go stale. Similar in tone to the films or Christopher Guest (Best in Show, A Mighty Windy) but actually more consistently funny.

Peep show has just wrapped on season 6. I think this one should be the last, they have to really pull out a great finale.

Watch Father Ted. Oh my god just watch Father Ted. I really wish I could go back in time and watch it all again for the first time. Its so delightfully odd, as only a sitcom about three Irish priests imprisoned on an island can be.

And Brass Eye. Seriously, it is worrying how accurate Chris Morris predicted 24 cable news. "You heard them, its WAR!"

Chris Morris is a genius.

Which brings me on to the criminally underrated 'Nathan Barley'

"It's gonna be well Mexico, yeh?"

Ahead of it's time, and essential viewing for anyone who's ever worked in the meeja.

Nathan Barley is really funny, but at times I thought it was very smug and up itself.

Also Chris Morris is apparently making a film about Al Qaeda, and it is apparently both really funny and a really good war film (?). I may be conflating the reviews of The Hurt Locker with it though.

Dead Set is probably not what you're looking for, but its a great example of quite how dead pan British Comedy can be. The premise is that there is a zombie apocalypse. The story centers around the Big Brother housemates, who don't quite realise what is going on. It is worth it for no other reason than ZOMBIE DAVINA MCCALL. It is a black comedy, a very black comedy. It's basically Peep Show meets Dawn of the Dead.

The League of Gentlemen. Very dark, very sick. And Little Britain ripped a fair bit of it off. See the original if you can ;)

Damn you- I was gonna suggest that!

Another one to watch is Father Ted. It's genius. And cos I'm so good, here's a clip! :D

But to be fair to the show, check out a full episode. It's way funnier in context.

The Day Today, the show Chris Morris did before Brasseye is great. And nobody has mentioned Spaced? How is this even possible?
