Just wondering if it's a tad overly obsessive to do things like write up whole articles of things which characters may read before writing the piece, so that they will be able to comment more naturally on the item?

Whatever gets you into your characters and your plot.

... and as long as that doesn't distract you from the real work (which is the novel itself).

IMHO it's a tad obsessive. Spend the time on your novel.

*chuckles* Well, overly obsessive or not, if the articles are good, you could always sell them, and make a little 'meantime cash' while you're writing your novel! :D

As long as you're not using it as a distraction from writing the actual story, there's nothing wrong with being overly obsessive. (It worked for JK Rowling!)
