View Full Version : Whose voice is your voice?

Do you hear a particular person's voice narrating your work as you write it (or re-read it?)
I am curious, because today I realized that I very distinctly hear the queen of audiobooks, Gabrielle DeCuir in my head as I write. It was almost scary to recognize this. I do love her voice, though, and the cadence of her reading. I kind of realized that as I edit and revise, I cut anything that I can't imagine her reading out loud.
Weird, huh?
So how about you? Who reads your fiction?

This has never occurred to me before.
But I will say I would be one day very pleased if Alan Rickman were to ever narrate my audiobook.
He's probably not even the same style, but I. don't. care.
Honestly? Me. :)
I don't think I've ever heard another voice. Kinda jealous now. ;)

I don't hear a particular voice. It depends on what I am working on. Different narrator for different stories.

Well, I listen to a lot of audiobooks. And DeCuir is my favorite reader. So I guess it's kinda natural.

Whoever's PoV the section is written in, most of the time. Same when I read other people's books. I imagine the characters with different voices reading their own parts out loud.
Does anyone else do this or am I just insane?

Um none?
Although I'm seconding Alan Rickman just because.
Oh and Stephen Fry.

Not unless I'm crazy too. :tongue
Huh. That's interesting. I didn't even know that I do that.

I do that - each character has their own voice! Lest be insane together!
Nakhlasmoke - Stephen Fry has a wonderful voice! The sort that makes me think he is reading just to me!

This goes for my MSs and other peoples' works too, it's always in the character whose POV I'm reading.

We're currently listening to his readings of the Harry Potter books. He's made of sweet sweet awesomesauce, basically.

I never listen to audiobooks and I never 'hear' as I write, but Stephen Fry should be made King of the Whole Damn Farkin' Universe without delay.
That is all.

I would like Jean Reno to narrate my works, if they were ever nade into audio books, the only trouble is I'd slide off my chair in delerium. :D
Richard Burton would have done nicely too, I love his voice, but even though he still does the voice for Jeff Wayne's War of the words, I don't think I'm going to get a voice from the grave, am I... well, not unless he comes back as a zombie. :tongue
That is such a good question! It's never crossed my mind before, but now I think about it...
Usually, the voice I hear matches the style of the writing - like, if it's a comedy, it'll be a sarcastic dude, and if it's a fantasy prologue, it'll be a gruff old man. That probably sounds really crazy, but at least there are others out there who do the same. :)

Movie Announcer Guy. Constantly! Except he also narrates my life too. I'm probably on some bizarre version of the Truman Show and don't know it.
... PA announcers in subway and train cars that give commuters those garbled and unintelligable messages that no one ever pays any attention to.

I'd like Kenneth Williams (God rest him) to have been able to voice my erotica.

3rd person, well, it's usually me.
1st it can be different, depending. My most recent story I heard a Texas man with a honey-deep voice tell me, listen to this on account I got a story to tell.
So I did.

I agree... on not hearing a particular voice. Honestly, I don't hear Alan Rickman a lot. ;)
I think it depends on what I'm writing or at which spot in the story I'm writing it.

^^^ This. Each POV character has their own voice, and I always hear that, rather than my own or anyone else's. And, like Libbie, I cut out anything that doesn't sound right if that person's voice was reading it aloud.
So, when I tell people I take dictation from the voices in my head, I'm not entirely kidding...

My voice but with a slight pinch of Southern ....which as a gal from Nova Scotia....cracks me up

I'm pretty sure it's my voice, but a little deeper and not as young sounding.

I so hear Jim Dale when I'm re-reading, and I have to physically stop myself from hearing it that way and pick another "voice" so I don't make my book sound more interesting than it actually is. He makes EVERYTHING more interesting.
(**dreaming "Pushing Daisies" is back on TV**)..... :)
When I'm writing, each character has his or her own gender-specific, but somewhat ambiguous voice in my head. I'm always the narrator, but voiceover is a large part of what I do anyway so it would be weird to hear someone else's voice in that role, I think.
When I'm reading my own work aloud to check the flow, I change my voice somewhat for each character and revert to my normal speech patterns for the narrator.
BUT...when I read someone else's work, I only hear my own voice in my head for everything. Characters and narration. I find that strage for some reason. But it's not intentional, it's just how it happens.
