Hey,

So I started a historical novel a couple of weeks ago that is about two young women who go into service at an old castle. I never plan my novels, but rather take an idea and go with it to see where I end up.

This one was intended to be an adult novel but I'm beginning to wonder if it would suit a slightly younger audience. My MCs were going to be aged 20 but now I'm thinking of taking their ages down to 17 because they still have a lot to learn about the world and have acted very naively in various situations so far. They both have a 'learning curve' to experience throughout the novel. Plus the general tone of my novel is lighter and my style is less verbose than previous novels I have written.

I will be exploring various adult themes. For example, the novel opens up with Prudence nearly being seduced by the local 'player' and feeling very ashamed because of it. The novel will be set during the build up for the English civil war and I want to include some of the politics that surrounded that (all very exciting stuff, but perhaps a little too much like a history lesson?) and there will be some violence and sex to come.

It's also very much intended for a female audience: it's about relationships of different kinds, and living in the 'domestic sphere' as a young woman, at a time when the average woman did not expect to marry before the age of 25. In many ways it would appeal to the young Austen lovers out there, but I do worry that such a target audience is too narrow.

Any advice would be gratefully lapped up. Cheers!
Lau

It sort of sounds like YA, if they're going to be 17, and if there's a lot of learning and growth that goes on. Teens can handle violence and sex, so that is a non-issue. I guess I don't know how popular historical fiction is among YA readers (though I personally loved historical fiction as a teen!) so I can't comment on the size of your target audience.

I believe it is. There are historical fiction novels out there. In your case I would just finish the book and try to see how to market it once you are done. Since you work based on flow of the story then you don't know where you will end up. Just write it and finish it. While you are writing do searches on books similar to yours, and find out how their authors are marketing their books and you will see where yours fits in.

It's all going to depend on the ages of those characters, I think.

I'm not an expert, but I did take a YA fiction class. I think it depends less on the age and more on the type of writing and themes explored. Adult language and themes can be used; we studied a lot of books with adult themes. It's been 4 years since I studied it, but I think your best bet would be to read other YA novels and see how those authors handled it. The book Speak comes to mind. From what I heard, YA is a lot more difficult to write because you have to keep teenagers interested. I'm not sure I could do it. Best of luck! Your book sounds interesting.

It sounds like it could go either way. I'd suggest reading a few YA historicals and seeing if yours is similar in tone/theme/subject matter. That'll give you a better perspective on it.

As the others said, it sounds like it could be either. Violence and sex (as long as it's not TOO explicit) as well as language are all fair game in YA. I'd read a few YA historical fictions to see if it seems to fit in, and the best of those I can think of is A Northern Light, though I forget who it's by.

I think it could definitely be a YA. I've known plenty of teenage girls who adore historical fiction so I'd say your audience is out there.

Happy writing, it sounds good fun :)

Historical YA is having a bit of a come back I think. Try checking out Libba Bray's A Great and Terrible Beauty trilogy. It is very popular with teens (with some adult crossover) in victorian times.

I'm not sure about all historical YA but victorian is especially hot right now. (Isn't that one of the weirdest sentences ever?) I can think of four or five series/trilogies off the top of my head.
