Do you have what it takes?

I want to hear you say it. I'm a firm believer that you have to believe something before you can achieve it. Are you good?

I see the self doubt that we're expected to show--I get all that. I may stink, I don't know for sure. I get it.

But here you are, and I see you all asking the questions and doing the work, it isn't because you doubt yourself. You have to believe in yourself to do this thankless shit day in and day out.

If you had the right mentor? If you had a year away from [distraction], if you could just sit down totally satisfied with life---whatever your burden is, tell me something I need to know: Are you good? Brag for a second huh?

I don't want to feel like a total ass, thinking--without any evidence--that I have what it takes. I've never had confidence in myself at my most arrogant, and I know people think I'm an ass sometimes on this board. But I don't feel it, its like I know it and always have known it.

I'm writing my memoir from the POV of a writer, and I need to know if other people (hi SP) feel this way. Will you join me and say "I'm fucking good enough, and I always have been!"

I have to claim what I want. I can't append it to someone else's belief in me - the mentor thing. In fact, I discount most of what other people say. I have to trust my own instincts. I've been known to be pro-active. I like me that way.

I have no illusions that I'm publishable -- yet. But yes, I believe I have the tools to get there. I'm trying very hard to learn how to use them and when to use them. I haven't been critted enough to get the blues yet, but I'm going to accept that as part of the deal and learn from it too.

I don't need to say "If only X, Y and Z set of circumstances materialised, then I could become the sort of person I want to be." I'm a control freak and I make my own luck, so no waiting. If the circumstances aren't right, I'll make them so.

I think I am good. I'm not the best - there are others here with far more talent and confidence (coughcoughscarletpeachescoughcough) than I, but I love my book. I am aware that it's not perfect, but it's GOOD. It's gripping. It sucks you in, makes you want to know what happens next, the evil dude is downright creepy, and it's ALL MINE. MINEMINEMINE! I thought it up on my own and wrote it down on my own. (Well, my husband had input, but it's MINE, dammit!)

And I'm good.

(Wow, that was weirdly liberating!
