I just had a read-through of one of my plays with a theatre company. The reading went well and everyone was really nice, but the one suggestion they did have was that my characters were too well-rounded and I needed to focus on just one or two characters. Looking at the play, I see they are right and some of the things I have in there are enough to write two or three plays. Has anyone ever received this feedback before? What did you do with it? I've been brainstorming, but I've lived with these characters for so long, I don't want to cut them out! But there are so many backstories that I could almost write a play on a couple of the "supporting" characters. How do you guys consolidate your characters to make them less rounded and make the story more about one person? I'm having a really hard time deciding who it should be...it's nuts. One of the characters, I could totally chop down and make a whole play about his issues, but the others, it's hard. Eh....any help would be appreciated.
