One of these pesky questions of length: How many words is a short story collection normally? I don't mean anthologies now.

I imagine about the same length as a short novel. 50,000 words, maybe? (I'm making a total stab in the dark here.)

You can always go to the book store and flip through some of the short story collections there to find out.

on average, thumbing through the bookshelf behind me, i assess between 35k and 50k; between 140 typeset pages and 200.

within those parameters fits one denis johnson, two mark richards, hempels', a stephen graham jones, one stephen blackburn, and a "dear mr president" by gabe hudson
