Hey, so here's the deal: I am an artist (see a sample of my work below in sig) and I just bought the Artist's and Graphic Designer's Market. I'd like to get into cover art design, so I would like to get some volunteers who have a WIP and would like me to design cover art for it that I can submit as a portfolio piece. You, in exchange, will get an electronic file of the art to keep. I have no intention of plagiarising or anything, I have my own WIP and don't even write fantasy, but I can work off a writing sample if needed. Please PM me or respond if interested. Thanks!

OMG, really???

I've been after someone to do some covers for mine for ages.

If you can draw fantasy stuff, them please, let me know! If it comes off, I'll send you a signed copy! (Which will be very valuable when I'm rich and famous! ;) )

I am dead serious. Give me a prompt and I'll work on one for you. My favorite medium is watercolor on bristol paper, although I enjoy painting as well. I have some art up on a Harry Potter site, sugarquill.net under the same screenname, sveltskye (although, be warned that those are from several years ago.) You might particularily like "The Wizard King", which a cover concept for a medieval fantasy retelling of HP.

Edit: Sorry, I actually meant watercolor *pencils* on bristol, not just watercolor (though I do that too).

Ok, I've got quite a few now so be prepared to wait a bit if you message me at this point. However, I will try to get to all the people I hear from. :).

Out of curiosity, would you consider doing short stories, as well? (I guess it wouldn't be cover' art in that case, but y'know...)

I logged off just before this thread was created and I've bet I've missed the boat again :(

Hopeful message sent...

Yeah I look forward to seeing the examples. I once saw a job for a cover artist and they wanted 20 - 30 examples of work. Half of which had to be published and shipped. Yikes.

Hey everyone. I have been pretty inundated with emails about this so I'm just doing a big blanket statement. I am going to do my best to make a cover for everyone who requests, but I'll be doing them in the order of who emailed me so if you are just responding, be prepared to wait a bit.
I'm excited to start though! I can do a short story or excerpt or work from a photo or just a description, it doesn't really matter. But my mailbox is filling up here so send any new requests to my email, [email protected].
Also FYI- I work traditionally, at least until I getter a better grasp of Illustrator, so I am going to work on these with watercolor pencil on bristol paper, unless I get sick of it or a piece is really suited to something else. I can really do kick ass graphite (see sig below) so let me know if you'd like to go black and white. But I think most fantasy pieces are better suited to color.
I will post anyone's who will let me. This should be fun!
And sorry, I did get your email with the attachment, K., just didn't get the chance to reply. Its saved though.

That's a really beautifully drawn portrait. I know that the magazine Realms of Fantasy is looking for art, both interior and cover. You might consider sending samples of your work there and seeing if you can get some contracts that way. The art director is Doug Cohen. Here are the guidelines from his blog:

Good luck in your career!

Best regards,

My brother is already doing a lot of art for my books, but I wanted to wish you luck in building your portfolio.

Ok, I'm sure you all thought I had forgot about this. But I didn't, I just got a little stuck on the first one as I was finishing my own novel (which is now finished- yay!). Anyways, here it is, finished. I want to polish it a little in photoshop as I'm not quite happy with it, but this is it so far. I am sorry for being such a bum and making you all wait.

Ok, here's number two. Sorry this is so slow going, I have a lot of other things on my plate, but I am still working on them.

Description: vampire/assassin romance, assassin is "cute with a side of pretty", auburn hair, wearing a cowl. The man was from a photo, the girl was made up.

Here's hoping this works:
