Well, I've written poetry in my free time for a few years now, and I chanced upon this forum a few weeks ago. I figured I'd give it a shot and post one of my poems to see what people other than my friends think about it. I know the syllable count fluctuates like crazy, but I just ended up writing it that way haha. I hope somebody enjoys it!
Omens

"Son watch my magic finger,"
He said to me as I left the room.
His moonshot eyes seared me through
his voice, it trembled with doom.
"I cannot tell you how important this is;
my old task now in your hands.
The state of grace, now in disrepair
spreads all across these lands,"
I nodded because I understood,
however later I would come to know
that the moon light upon his eyes
and the flight of the omen-crow
went palm to palm, wrist to wrist
in matters of clemency
and no matter how he struggled
I could not prepare myself for this blasphemy.
So his stare caught my eyes
and he finished his warning.
"Don't trust a soul...
and be off by the morning."
His wild breath fell silent
and the moon-glow went dim.
The cloak he wore shouted as he departed
and I knew my sleep would be slim.
I did not dream.
The next day upon the morn'
I awoke from my narrow slumber
with a new mind and a new goal.
Towards the horizon did I lumber
and in the fire rising from the sun
my eyes did play a trick.
For I could have sworn in that dawn
I spied a raven's chick.
This vision accelerated on by
leaving me dazed in a waking pile.
My mind was weak, but my will strong.
I recovered after a short while,
slung the gunna-sack over my shoulder
and mounted my dying steed.
My actions had to happen soon
if I were to stop the demon's seed.
The days that followed were countless and long
leaving my skin dry and broken.
My hair sunbleached from brown to blond.
I was helpless lest my heart's token.
The desert, it seemed to unroll in curtains
of buffeting sands and ceaseless sun.
Eventually my horse died, starved and thirsty
leaving my journey to be made on the run.
So I ran.
The running did ache my body at first.
I soon came to feel nothing at all.
My vision suffered from the sandblasts.
It was natural that I would fall
and I did one day in a sinkhole (in the dune)
the black and the wet stone shocked my skin.
The change broke gooseflesh on my neck.
I drank the water as men drink sin.
This cavern that now consumed my vision
held a behemoth quality of existence.
It was ancient beyond all years measurable
and it was here that I gained sustenance.
The purified spring waters
and the flesh of the winged rat
drove away the delusions
which had lain underneath my hat.
Many days later,
with my refreshed state of mind
I ventured much further into the dark
to see what curiosity could find.
In the far reaches of the cave
there stood a great waterfall
who's mighty roar resembled
the sound of a lion's call.
I was awed.
The pure power above my head
dwarfed any ambitions I had held.
For a moment I was discouraged, however,
my belly burned with the fires of hell.
"This journey of mine is the greatest of all!
Nothing can keep me from reaching my goal."
So I burrowed from that cave after many days
like a vermin, like a mole.
Upon reaching the surface I soon realized
just how far that cavern had sprawled.
The land was now lush and it was clear
underneath the mountains I'd crawled.
In the distance, with no obstacles to block
I set my gaze upon the citadel.
A horrible cloud of death and decay
sprouted from its point like a well.
That was my destination, the end,
and I had never seen it for true.
My ancestors had placed upon me this duty;
they had taught me exactly what to do.
However, despite my knowledge
the fear caught hold of my throat;
draped itself around my conscience
like a wicked overcoat.
The end.
With my new style covering my purpose,
my every move became less precise.
I continued on the last stretch, but
every move was a roll of the dice.
The fog in the sky brought an image to me
of another omen first spied on this trail.
The raven hatchling flying in the dawn,
the symbol of fire-wrought hell.
My quest was doomed
I knew this from the start.
This did not prevent me
from my untimely depart.
The world was in ruin
and I was the last capable one.
I had to at least try
for the sake of the sun.
So I went to the door
of the evil spawn's palace
after marching once more
and a last drink from my chalice.
This was the end.
Every part of me knew.
I could not stop,
and neither should you.
because trying to stand strong
in the face of an unstoppable force
only makes the collision that much more painful.
The omens depicted nothing but failure
and there were no rewards for me;
and they were correct of course
but it never hurts to see.
