..how many unpublished novels do you have laying around your house. Not the one's out on submission, but those lovingly written manuscripts you'll always feel proud of but never quite made it. (I have one)

(Side question, if you do have one or a few, did you finally get one published or are you still, like me, slogging away?)

Four uncompleted and three completed novels in the closet.

On the pubbed side I have three published novels that are now out of print. One sold novel to be released this month (which spent several years in the closet, btw). One (contracted sequel) completed and on my editor's desk. Two (a contracted sequel and something else I'm experimenting with) currently in progress.

I have a couple of animal fantasies I wrote when I was a kid. They're full-blown novels. I'd estimate each is about 60,000 words. For the writings of a pre-teen, they're good. And they show dedication. But they will never even TRY to be published. Ugh.

Five.

But I'm not proud of any of them. They were just necessary mistakes.

About five. I wrote them for myself as a challenge to tackle other genres. They were fun exercises and I learned a lot.

None. I have a novel in need of a rewrite, but I don't count it because I WILL be submitting it eventually. ;)

Three complete. #1, my trunk novel, is dear to me so I'll rewrite it some day soon. And I do mean rewrite, not edit. Actually, overhaul.

#2 is a YA romance. Passable, but I'm not as passionate about it as I am about the genre I currently write.

#3 Chicklit and for some reason it embarrasses me to say that. But I'll rewrite it one day because the ending isn't typically shoes-and-boyfriends angst. I could put a twist on it to fit with my current genre.

I also have two unfinished novels in which I lost interest. One could be adapted, again to my current genre. The other I'll probably bin for good. Too angsty.

I also have two further novels - one edited, soon to be subbed. Another which is a first draft and I'll be editing that soon. I'm really happy with these two. They mark a watershed in my writing progress, without a doubt.

And my current WIP.

So that's three trunk novels, two half-finished ones, two complete and one in progress.

One that I wrote back in high school. It's terrible but the idea just beckons and I keep going back and wondering how to make it not suck.

And at least three that are partials. (I was really into the project-hopping for, well, a long time.) By partial I mean 20k words or more. Not the gajillions of first chapters that I have floating around.

Then there's the WIP. It is not just sitting at the moment though, but being thrashed into publishable condition.

So, I guess that equals... one.

One. A 125K monstrosity that I'm afraid to look at. It's a paranormal mystery and in some ways darker than the one I'm working on now. Once this WIP is out, I plan to go back and see if it's salvagable.

Thanks for indulging me! There's part of me the winces each time I trek down to the basement and see the box with my first novel. So much time and excitement poured into it just to be boxed away, but also many many lessons and learning experiences wraped up there. Just curious to see how many had one (or more) of their own.

14k from one.

About 10k from another.

I'm what they call a quitter. I prefer 'short fiction writer.'

The first novel I wrote is a trunk novel which will stay in the trunk. I consider it my "training novel."

My second novel lay around the house for some years; I revisited it several times over those years and spiffed it up, and now, it's my published novel.

Which leaves: my novel-in-progress (which is actually a rewrite of an earlier novel, and the reworking is going very well).

I also have three more novels: one which I wrote to get myself out of a terrible writing slump two years ago, and another which I wrote for NaNo that same year. Not sure I'll do anything with either of those. But the third -- it's a story I love, but it's one heck of a challenging tale, and it will require considerable hammering to get it in shape.

Well... I am writing a 3 book trilogy, and want to finish it before I think about attempting publication...

but I have one completed that needs a heavy rewrite and one that is 9/10ths done... that I seemed to have not found an ending for... or I've found an ending and hate it. Depends on what day of the week it is.

Eight full novels. And thirty short stories.

I have printed copies of everything I've ever written.

None.

First go at a novel officially released today. Second go will be released next year.

We all go down a different path. But, it's possible to get that first one published.
