How do I format a foreign language in a screenplay? I want to display the subtitled version of dialogue but at the same time need to display the original foreign language version of dialogue to be read by the actors...so how does this work in a formattinf of a script?

In brackets under the character. Then write what he has to say IN ENGLISH

CHARACTER
(Japanese; subtitled)
Dear screenwriter, you actually have to write this in English so the English-speaking monolingual director won't explode. The Japanese actors will decide how to say this in Japanese.

What he said, though it's frustrating to be able to write dialogue in another language and not be able to actually do it (especially when wanting a character to sound like a foreigner).

It helps to mess up the English grammar, or have it, at least, resemble a direct translation of the native language. (^_^)
