I don't know if any of you are planning to attend college or are currently attending and considering transferring to a different school that has a better writing program. If you are I would suggest checking out the University of Iowa and their Writing Workshop. Here is the link: http://www.uiowa.edu/~iww/iowa.htm.
If I hadn't already spent $40K on college I would probably try to enroll there.

Iowa Writer's Workshop is the best in the country and is highly selective. I believe it is a master's program though. The college offers a nice on-line writing course as well-- but it is not the writer's workshop, and I think it is no-credit.

The Iowa Writer's Workshop has long been an M.F.A. program, but just recently they have established a Bachelor's degree program as well. I did the M.F.A. thing back in the 1970s, with John Irving as my advisor (too bad his lessons didn't take). My daughter is now moving to Iowa City where she intends to establish residency and enroll in the Bachelor's program in 2010.

They also have a well-known non-credit program of summer workshops, worth looking at.

I went to a great summer Writer's Workshop there a few years back. Loved the town and the experience was intense. Class members critiqued each other's work at night after the classes and we reviewed them the next day.

Iowa City in the summer is one of the pleasantest places on the planet. Just plain a beautiful small town with a relaxed atmosphere.

Ah...summertime in Iowa City. Brings back happy memories.

Unfortunately, Iowa City is too far to drive regularly. Does anybody know of something of interest for writers in Des Moines?

You mean besides the State Historical Society, with all its lovely research opportunities? :)

I'm more than willing to commute the two-hour round trip for a weekend session at the Iowa Summer Writing Festival, but when I can manage a week-long session, I just stay up there.

I have to deliberately save up both funds and vacation time for it, so I've ony managed it twice, but I think it's well worth the extra expense.
