I have written my memoirs. I am in the process of finet uning my proposal before I start to submit to agents. Here's my question.

I am a contributor to a book that's going to be published in Australia. It's called Inspired Recovery. It's about people who have recovered from different mental illnesses. My general story is in the book. I was told by a literary agent who asked to see my proposal that I should be careful. Specifically, she said to make sure that I give "original" material, not material included in my book. That way, she says I want have to worry about my material being copyrighted by someone else.

My question is exactly what does that mean? If there is information about me and my story in the chapter in the book, does that mean I can't use the same information in my book or does it mean something else?

It's not my area of the law so I need some guidance here.

Just don't use the same sentences and words--that is, re-write the story. Don't just use the same text. Don't look at the other version either. Make it new, and better.
