Hi all,

Way back in October 2008 I hit a wall with my 1st novel, I had 5 characters and a story line that was surpassing the 50 A4 page mark and I'd only just introduced each one. I decided at that point to remove 2 of my characters & split the novel into 2 stories.

I have since hit another snag, after finishing my novel I have found that its 212,000 words.

I've been trawling through the archives of this topic and found some information that is a few years old and wanted to know if any of this info has changed ...

1) is the ideal word length for a first time author still between 80k-120k?
2) do agents/publishers still work on the 250p/pg theory?

I already know that I have some serious editing to do being over 800 pages on the 250 rule. But any help on these questions would be gratefully appreciated

Ta x

Many agents now go by the word count of the word processing software you use, but some still calculate 250 words per page. Yes, 80-120K is still the most desirable window for a debut author, although it's typically only fantasy books that hit the higher end. Anything over 120K is almost unsalable. (There are a few exceptions.)

Ditto. 100K is kinda the upper limit at the moment in most genres, but if the book is outstanding you could go a little higher. With the way the industry and economy is now though, might be a good idea to play it safe and stick to 100K or under.

The 250 words/page calculation works for US paper sizes, you get about 2 more lines per page with the A4 paper we use in Europe, best to go with your word-processor count.
