He hasn't seen it and he has enough information to want it banned?

I really hate it when people fly off the handle about something they haven't seen yet.

I also hate it when people claim that something should be banned. Quick, protect the public from all the nasty old amorality!

I read this article yesterday and...brace yourselves.

While the DM says a lot I agree with (okay, okay, my politics are becoming more right-wing as I get older, sue me), this is the biggest heap of judgemental SHITE I have read in a long while.

Point well made about the scabs. But this is a movie which I have a right to see (or not) as I choose and see fit.

I mean...this is above and beyond righteous indignation. This is borderline fanaticism. Thank god I read it online and didn't pay for the paper!

Lars von Trier is not exactly mainstream viewing. I can't see too many under-18s saying 'Mummy, Mummy take me to see the new film by that crazy Danish man I've never heard of before!' Why don't these journalists realise that it's just giving the film publicity? If you're that offended just shut your face and don't give it any exposure (no pun intended.) It'd hurt the film far more if everyone refused to discuss it at all.

It sounds like this person just really doesn't like Lars Von Trier. And he can be arrogant and annoying to some people. But geez...I read his synopsis, and while I'm sure there's more to it than that, I don't buy that "merely reading about Antichrist is stomach-turning, and enough to form a judgment."

I wonder what this guy would have said about some of the movies we watched in my sexuality and the cinema course.

Exactly. It's pathetic for a film critic to say this. Surely as a person with enough of an interest in film to make his living reviewing them, he can't seriously believe this is right.

Yeah, that's why I kind of think he has a bias against Lars Von Trier. I mean seriously, reading a synopsis is enough to decide whether or not you want to watch a movie, in most cases. But it's not enough to say what he's saying in this editorial.

The thing that keeps bugging me is, I read the synopsis and I still have no idea how it has anything to do with the biblical anti-Christ!

If he's calling for a universal ban on a film he's never seen and has no intention of seeing, it rather defeats the purpose of even claiming to have an opinion about the film.

What's that? A creepy and weird film with Wilem Defoe being creepy and weird? Sign me up.

I can't imagine it'll be more fucked up than Salo, so I reckon I'll be able to handle whatever Lars Von Trier can throw at me.

I think the Daily Mail has had PMT this week or something - it's even more foaming mad dog than usual.

Don't get me started on the Pagan thing and Richard Littlejohn.

If God wanted men to be treated equally to women, She would have enabled them to have multiple orgasms, Willem.

Hehe.

Seriously, though, I think I'll just watch the hot sex I can find on the internet, myself.

I'm sure that Antichrist will have better acting, better plot, better sound AND better lighting.

BUT WILL IT HAVE CATGIRLS!?

I think not!

The tremendous amount of "moral outrage" being aimed at this movie is the main thing that has it on my radar. When I first heard of it I was largely indifferent, then I kept reading about how depraved it is. Still not exactly wanting to see it, but I'm curious as to how revolting it could possibly be.

This should give you an idea of how revolting it is:

A tenner says this is what the critic read and then decided he knew enough to call for it be banned.

I was more replying to your "sign me up." Body of Evidence was piss-awful.

I'll always remember him as Wilhelm Shrek in Shadow of the Vampire. That film kicked ass. It is also the only film to show Defoe without makeup.

Tell me this isn't the only reason you hate the Daily Mail?! I can furnish you with many more if you need them!:D

This quote is the one I found most ridiculous:

I haven't seen it myself, nor shall I - and I speak as a broad-minded arts critic, strongly libertarian in tendency.

Sure you do... Libertarian in tendency my A.

Is the Daily Mail giving any crank a soapbox these days? Is this what passes for opinion journalism these days? Parts of it don't make sense- it's poorly written and is advocating censorship. Not exactly very liberatarian of him.

Only if their columns incite a load of people to spurious emotions

Shame - I used to buy purely for the cryptic crossword and the race me and my Dad had to get it finished.

Now I can't ignore the crap.

He is no libertarian. Of course, I quit the Libertarian Party when they formulated an offical party platform so I could be wrong. He sounds to me like any other died in the wool proponent of censorship. Not a strong libertarian stance.
