Drama vs movie

Personally, I have no aspirations of ever winning an Oscar. I'm a bit too realistic for that. I just want to write a decent movie which will either entertain, stimulate your brain or show you a good time. I have no interest in writing the next Steel Magnolias...I'd much rather write the next Hardboiled, Night of the Living Dead or Raising Arizona.

The thing I'm writing for is just for the pure fun of it. I love to just set down, take ideas off the top of my head and write them down. It is a way for me to forget the problems of every day life and kind of just venture into my own little world for some time.

I know that I'll probably never be good enough to sell a script to Hollywood. If I had my way I'd major in this field but I would rather get a very steady career and write on the side. But for now I just write for the fun of it and because I think I do a pretty good job at it also.

Now that you've heard my story, it wouldn't bother me which one I write. As long as I have an idea that I can put on paper, weather it be a 10 page short of 120 page screeplay, I'll be happy.

No, not my cup of tea.
I like things to be wrapped up pretty quickly.
I don't have the patience to keep up with all the characters and
story lines over a long period of time.

I'm hoping for the big screen and yeah, I'd like to get an Oscar.
Heck, if you reach for the sun then you just might make it to the moon.

I agree, saying you dont care about recognition for your script is like saying you don't care about recognition for a child you raised. ITs just too much of a passion for me to not want to write the best movie anybody has ever experienced, not just some good flick for a blockbuster night. Even if my hobby was basket weaving, I'm going to want to be the best darn basket weaver this side of the mississippi.

Actually it's the exact opposite.

L&O have (almost) totally self-contained episodes. The McCoy from 5 years ago is basically identical to the McCoy of today. Dick Wolf chose this style of storytelling very deliberately - in total opposition to the style of the time which was pioneered by 'Hill Street Blues' - having long series long character arcs inter-weaved with a cop drama.

When Dick Wolf commented that he made this choice quite deliberately, I though 'It'll never last'. I was wrong. Now it's clear that the one of the reasons it has lasted so long - the characters don't have any built-in expiry dates.

I guess that's why Dick Wolf is Dick Wolf, whereas I'm just ...
