Email notification utility on last legs/seeking recommendations

I have been using a webmail email notification utility, e-prompter, for a couple of years now.

However, it has over the past few months decreased severely in performance in terms of numbers of email stored, read and displayed, as well as ability to read & display clearly all email.

It no longer serves its original purpose, and I do not have time to try and get the technology issues sorted out, if I could.

I will “soon” be moving to use of an email client, and I would like some recommendations from the members here for a reliable, consistent email notification utility.

My only requirements are that:

* it be free

* permits use with both webmail and an email client.

Koma-Mail is my current favorite. I used to use Foxmail (no relation to Firefox the browser) but I can't recommend it any more because of installation issues and other details. I know what to do when everything comes up Chinese, but I'm not going to walk everybody else through it :roll:

Koma is sweet -- small, fast, has all the necessary features without a lot of unneeded complication. I've tried others. Thunderbird gave me a lot of trouble with a Yahoo account. Every time it flubbed the connection, nothing else could get through for hours. Maybe it has improved since that time, but I don't want it. Pegasus is much loved by many, but it has far too many bells and whistles, and too much bloat for my taste.

If you want really simple, Popcorn has been a standard-setter in mail checking for years. It's completely portable too. I use it especially when I just want to check a few accounts and delete spam without having to download any mail.

Ah - P.S. -- if you need to check strictly webmail accounts, get Freepops -- it works as a sort of proxy with any e-mail client.

Not sure how you feel about Gmail, but it provides a built-in notifier, and can be used as webmail or through an e-mail client. In fact, they've just introduced an off-line version for use in a browser!

Ack. That redirect was not a nice surprise. I think my link was a little stale. It had an extra directory in it, and some underhanded internet sneakiness turns all slightly off popcorn-related links toward a site I will never EVER buy popcorn from. This link to PopCorn the e-mail checker is crunchier.

Following on from the OP, I thought that I might find a "small -ish" utility. I found POP Peeper.

Unfortunately, while it is designated at the download site as an email notification utility, it starts to look like an email client. I already have chosen Thunderbird email client, which integrates with my desktop search (DTS) software—Poppeeper does not.

In the meantime, a little bit of internet research turned up this free utility – digsby: http://www.digsby.com/features.php

It solves my immediate problem (ostensibly), but won’t know until I try. It also deals with other relevant issues.

Anyone here know of Digsby, or better, uses it? And can provide comment on it?

I've never used Digsby as an email notifier. However, I use it daily for notifications of Twitter accounts, Facebook, and the various IMs. It works great.

I am getting around to tackling this email notification utility & Thunderbird email client issue.

It appears that I am able to have TB programmed to work with Gmail and Yahoo webmail--the problem has been Hotmail.

The two solutions I have are:

i) use of Freepops

ii) use of mail forwarding from Hotmail to Gmail.

Any here have used Freepops &/or email forwarding? Care to comment on effectiveness, ease etc on utilising both or either of these methods? Are they difficult to set up? Will Freepops solve my problem with Hotmail? Or is there another solution?
