When was the last time you cried?

When was the last time that you read a novel or WIP that made you cry or at the least (operational concepts kicking in here for all those sociologists) made you teary eyed as some may ask what does he mean by 'cry'.

Did you read over something someone else has written or something that you have wrote that made you feel as though you would cry or on the verge of shedding a tear or two? And if so what is it?

The reason that I ask this si because there are some rather poignant scenes in my WIP in which the MC reunites with his re-animated mother and it does bring up certain emotions.

Never cried at a book. And I will salute any author and vow to buy all his/her future books if they manage to make me.

Okay, all joking aside, I'm astounded that some readers - some writers - have never cried at a book. It makes me wonder how you identify with characters. Both ones you read and others you create.

Maybe not even crying, but come on...you must have felt some emotional connection, otherwise what the hell keeps you reading? Why would you read at all if you never related to the characters? What would hold your interest?

It's even more amazing that we're all writers here.

Man that sucked, and Harry makes his grave without magic? Yeah.

It's been a couple of years for me, but it was actually on a reread. The last book in a series, someone dies. When rereading the book right before the last, the main character has a touching little scene with the character who dies later. Bawled my eyes out thinking all these two characters have are each other, then the one guy is going to kick the bucket later.

I re-read McCarthy's The Road to my wife. She def. cried at the end, and I'll admit I got a bit misty-eyed too (only cause she was crying, I swear!).

I probably cry at every book that has believable characters that have believable situations that call for a tear. I never used to - but now I see every person as someone else's kid. So sometimes yeah, I do. And at stories in the paper. Like the Lt Col in Afghanistan....Yeah that got me.

And for fictional stuff, I cried at Bagpuss when I was pregnant and it turned my brain

The Time Traveler's Wife. Been a couple of years. Actually I think if it had been just the book I wouldn't have cried, but I listened to it on CD - man, one of the best readings ever. It felt so PERSONAL.

From the title of this thread I thought we were going to be talking about just crying, period, and I was all prepared to confess my complete meltdown the other day... over some bricks in the garden. I am SO never getting pregnant again.

All the characters I ever liked in books/movies always seem to die in the end! I truly believe I am cursed... and I cry every time. You'd think I'd get used to it by now.

I remember as I was approaching the last few pages of my first marathon novel. After 48 hours living RIGHT INSIDE that novel...no sleep, lots of coffee, no stimulus outside the characters and their plights...man...I was crying writing that ending! I have no idea if it was good or not...it was bloody gut wrenching to me, though. Killed me.

The one and only time I ever actually cried over a novel, was when the brother, Chris, got killed in the Flowers in the attic books. lol. I was only in my early twenties then.
I came close once or twice when I was beta-reading Firedrake's Fields of gold, fields of red. And I hate to admit this, because it sounds big-headed, but I have some scenes in my own works that makes me want to cry... And no, it's not because they're written so badly either.

I cried last summer on the bus while reading Lottery. I also cried while reading Where the Red Fern Grows aloud to my kids. I challenge anyone to read that book and NOT cry.
