In my current WIP, every time I dig a little into somene's backround to help understand who they are in the present, I get sidetracked by the stories that present themselves. The people in these backstories seem to have so much going on in their own worlds, that it's like peeling back the layers of an enormous onion.
Now, I don't intend for much (if any) of this to end up in the current story, but I'm amazed at the volume and intensity of some of it. So I guess my question is: am I wasting my time pursuing all this if it's not relevant to the WIP? How do you know when to say when, when it comes to backstory? Anybody else ever struggle with this?
