Inspired by my own upcoming pub date, and my friend who's just joined AW and is looking for similar information...

How do you go about getting blurbs (outside of the ones your publisher may or may not procure for you)? I know there's the making-friends-with-other-writers bit, but does "cold-calling" ever work? (Writing to an author you admire whose work is similar to yours and asking for a blurb out of the blue, that is)

Are there any other ways to get blurbs? Six degrees of separation favors? Bribes? I hear JA Konrath can be bought for a six-pack. :D

[if you've been successful in getting blurbs for yourself, and you're willing to be interviewed on that subject, I'll love you and rep you forever if you visit my friend's thread :D]

Also - who would you want to blurb you? Share, even if it's totally pie-in-the-sky for a book you haven't even finished. I would kill for a blurb from Dean Koontz (but I don't think he even blurbs anyone... :( )

All of my blurbs were acquired via my editor. She asked me for names, I have her some. She even got me one from someone I didn't request (and let me tell you, I fell out of my chair over that blurb).

From other discussions I've seen in various places, it's generally not advised to "cold-call" and author and request a blurb, especially if you don't have a prior relationship of any sort. It can put the author in an awkward position of saying no (not interested, no time, etc...), or of trying to say something nice if they didn't, in fact, enjoy the work.

If you don't know any authors personally, you may want to try contacting a few via their agents or editors, rather than directly.

No idea but I'm hoping Melissa drops by with the tale of how she got a blurb from Charles De Lint.
