A Brief Outline ?

I am just beginning my search for an agent. Some of them ask for a 'brief outline'. Does this mean a synopsis? Or is it something not so in depth as that, more of a general overview?

I'd probably think outline == plot synopsis unless they specify otherwise, yep.

I was thinking a synopsis is usually around a thousand words. A 'brief' synopsis somewhat less, do you think?

I would go with a 2-page synopsis, say around 500 words or so. And make it so fabulous they'll race through it in three minutes and immediately pick up the phone. :-D

You can never go wrong with a one-page synopsis. It works for just about every agent out there. It's also not a bad idea to have a two-three pager just in case someone wants a longer version. This is also good if you have a series, as you can have longer synopses of the others books to show if asked for them.
