A synopsis should be no longer than the individual agent specifies... so check out the rules of whomever you're querying.
Having said that, if they don't specify, I would say about 1000 words is right for a novel of circa 100,000...
I guess the final word on this is: keep the synopsis tight; just as in your ms, if a word, sentence or paragraph can be removed without losing anything, then do so.

My answer was it probably isn't, although, generally, the shorter the better.

There's a ton of advice here. But the short version is that there is no agreed on length, or format, or just about anything else. So follow whatever guidelines the agents give you and be prepared to write more than one.
