What children's book did you hate as a child, but like now?

I was the kind of kid who would read anything (a little dangerous!) and there wasn't much I didn't like.

BUT, I didn't like WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE when I was a kid. I hought Max was a brat and well, the monsters skeered me :e2cry:

But, my kids like it and as an adult I can appreciate it. I am looking forward to the movie too.

What books are you just now coming to appreciate?

Ha. I read the thread title and the same story came to mind. I thought it was ridiculous that the kid would go be king of the wild things (wtf were those things anyway??) and that his parents were nuts to cave and feed him after sending him to bed without any supper.

Now, I like the absurdity of the creatures, but my kid asks the same things I did. lol

But I still think the parents shouldn't have caved and fed him.

(my kid went to bed without supper once. once. never needed to do that again)

i'm sure it says something about me and the secret wild things bottled up inside me...but that was my favorite book as a kid, and still is pretty high on the list.

I can't think of any that I've come to like as I've grown up. I can think of some that disappoint a little now. Most of the fantasy that I thought was so mind-blowing then seems a bit tame and slow-paced compared to more modern stuff. I LOVED Lloyd Alexander and Ursula K. LeGuin and Madeline L'Engle, but my sons just can't seen to get into any of their stories. Tastes change, I guess. I still think they're great writers, but...not the same grab-you-by-the-seat-of-the-pants-and-don't-let-go that TV has taught kids to expect.

My son loved Lloyd Alexander (the Book of Three series), but I haven't tried LeGuin or L'Engle with him yet (he is 10). As a kid I wasn't into fantasy, it seemed more for boys I guess, but as an adult I like it. I could not get into L'Engle as a kid. I love her stuff now though.

As a kid, The Velveteen Rabbit bored me to tears. But as a mom, when I read it to my six-year-old son, I loved it and he did too.

I had a disliking of Dr. Seuss as a child because my Grandma favored my brother and sister who were too old for the books. So, her presents sat unread.

That one made me cry. Like, ball my eyes out cry, lol. I refuse to read it now.
