Question for Nurses/Doctors

My MC pops the question to his girlfriend in a hospital emergency room, basically out of the blue, and doesn't have a ring yet.

Is there any sort of medical equipment that would suffice as a temporary ring? In my draft, I have the nurse cut some soft tubing and the MC ties it around her ring finger, but there has to be something better.

It would obviously have to be something more or less disposable, and the odder the better.

BTW, this takes place in the late-1970s.

You could snip off the end & it'd be a perfect ring. (well, if your MC's fiance likes latex jewelry...)

Twill Tape? Cotton string about a 1/2 wide that can be cut to desired length and then tied in a bow around her finger.

If you want something metal, and there are any firefighters/EMTs in the emergency room, many fire extinguishes have a clip ring that holds the piece that prevents it from firing to the trigger. Can be easily bent to the right size for that custom fit.

Another approach would be if one of the women is wearing a hoop earring. Easily modified into a ring with a bit of cutting and bending.

There are also numerous metal clips that hold things. These can be modified and liberated quickly.

For a more substantial ring, any piece of tubing can be cut, such as an IV pole, can be cut twice, creating a 1/4" segment. Couple of whacks with the K saw and two minutes is all it will take.

For the more discerning woman, take the previous piece of tubing. Sand edges to smooth it out, then polish (toothpaste works well). Drill a hole in the band in a size to be determined (yes, a rescue has a drill on it). Take a bottle of whichever color the woman prefers and smash it (glass, not plastic). You need to make small pieces. Pick a piece that seems the appropriate size. Polish with toothpaste to smooth out the edges, and use superglue to hold in hole. Depending upon the qualifications of the crew on the truck, and their amusement level, you could get a rather impressive ring this way. Total time to make would probably be about 15 minutes.

Activity level for the firefighters matter here, but get them into the right mood, and this can provide them with some significant entertainment. Hell, get them in the right mood, and no battilion chief in sight, and an alarm might go off in a jewelry store, requiring someone to show up. And oh, by the way, sell a ring.

Hey, this might be the solution to the cash-flow problems most volly FD's have...

We can all start making and selling IV tubing and glass engagement rings...
...O.K., I spent most of the morning in bunker gear climbing ladders and playing with hoselines as part of our basic training, FD is on the brain.

I kinda like the band-aid idea though. Was the female MC hurt? If so, the band-aid would be even more appropriate.
