View Full Version : Is your life an unfolding story?

I believe everyone's life is a story, and some people just have the gift to tell it, while others may not. So, the broad answer will always be "yes". But some of you have lives that others couldn't imagine.
Some people's lives are just so convoluted, you feel like you are Frodo, or Aragorn, in that your life is nothing short of a drama, a mystery, a sitcom, and somewhat of a real life fantasy.
I have one friend, who was attacked by a cobra while in India and killed it with a shovel. Another time he climbed his tree stand, not realizing a mother bear and its cub were in the tree. But instead of attacking, they went higher up to the top of the tree. Another time, while sick he leaned over the balcony, and the top floor rails snapped. Instead of getting killed his fall was broken by shrubbery. He was scratched up bad, but no broken bones. And in the same year, his dog wandered onto the ice, and fell through. He went in after it, and the ice cracked and he fell through. Then the other guy who was with him, went in, and fell in. There was no one else there, and he managed to push the other guy out, who went and got something and rescued him. But all of these dramas happened in a relatively short time.
How is your life a sitcom, greek tragedy, melodrama or simply too convoluted to know what to do with?

I don't know about my life being a melodrama, but if I were you, I wouldn't stand too close to your friend.

Hmmm. Well, I 'sit' in front of a 'com'puter.

I told him he should write his story, because it sounds like a cartoon, "The adventures of..."
He's like the kid in Lassie, who has to get in a bind every week to give the dog a chance to look smarter than he is. Actually, he's a very intelligent guy, and has been a real good friend. I don't think his calamities have rubbed off.
My life contains stories, but they wouldn't make good fiction. Real-life events often don't.

Yeah, my life is never ending drama. And most of it has nothing to do with my job. I don't know about how it would translate into a literary work, but it would make a damn good country song.

I have a friend like that, but his 'adventures' are all in the form of accidents. He's always having some bizarre accident that ends up with him getting stitches or a cast. My life isn't nearly so incredible, but I've had enough bizarre experiences to draw from in my writing.

Strangely, he wasn't hurt seriously in any of these mishaps. I do think it is strange that all of these things happen to one person. But I do know that some people's lives, for better and for worse, tend to come with a lot more turbulence.
Some people are generally like Hobbits, and as Frodo said, they don't have many adventures. Others are like Aragorn, whose life was one big adventure. I can't say I haven't had my share of adventures and perhaps even more mishaps than adventures, but I find other people's stories more fascinating. And people tend to feel the same way.
True story. I have a friend who is one of the nicest people I know. One day I was talking to his wife, and she makes this off handed remark about the time her husband rescued a woman from slavery in another country.
I said, "No, I never heard that story, and asked her to tell me."
The details are fuzzy, but, I think she was a foriegn exchange student who lived with them for a time. I'm relatively sure she is from China. They kept in touch, and she was working in another country (I will not name it) whose officials turn a blind eye to what amounts to sex slavery. People will kidnap women, (it's like the old fashion Shanghi) and dump them into a warehouse with all of these other women. And pretty much, since people don't know what happened to them, or where they took them (And in many cases, no one cares) some of them never escape.
Well, this guy found out she was missing, and having connections, he flew across the world, and essentially went and got her. He had to call high ranking government officials, and because of his connections, he was able to accomplish what would have been impossible for most of us. She is now an M.D living in Switzerland, and I do believe she has several children.
But this guy has done these incredible things. (I know of others), but he'd never tell you about them. To me, that's the kind of story that should be in a book, but I'm pretty sure it never will be, because he's very private about such things.

I hear you loud and clear. I've had a few blues songs along the way, but also some great songs. (Though I love the blues)

I had a six week period where I put fractures in both wrists, got shot in the leg, and rolled a pickup. Does that count?
And I may well be the only person in the history of the world who managed to shoot an arrow through his own hand. Not exactly high drama, but I'm told the look on my face was priceless.

If anyone needs dramatic inspiration, spend a year in Summit County CO. My theme has become: Fiction Happens.

This is an excellent question. Mine I feel is a mixed bag. For one, I almost died when I was younger and as a result have to deal with constant adversity in my life due to a slight disability. Sometime i find myself doing things that'd be in a sitcom and other times I have deeply dark, brooding moments, but it's not too bad and it keeps life interesting either way.
