This isn't in response to one question, but may help answer several.
All of the ballistic information I have at present is the bullet was a .45. I haven't learned yet if it's a .45 ACP, a .45 Long Colt, or one of the new souped up .45s, such as the .454 Casuls. The wound was accidentally self inflicted. Smart alecks in Montana called it a Northa Dakata suicide attempt.
Like all wounds, it's unique, but perhaps some writers can get a better idea of how a big-bore wound to an extremity looks:
