My best friend is a gay male, I'm looking for some books I can pick up for him. He mentioned a while back he couldn't find any decent books with gay characters etc .... Suggestions please??

Anything by Alan (Allan?) Hollinghurst but in particular The Line of Beauty which won the Booker a few years back.

If he hasn't read them - I would suggest Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City series. They're set in San Francisco, during the 1970s and I've read them probably a dozen times.

Yeah, I've read the entire series at least 7 times as a whole.If he hasn't read them - I would suggest Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City series. They're set in San Francisco, during the 1970s and I've read them probably a dozen times.
I also recommend My Blue Heaven and Putting on the Ritz by Joe Keenan. They're about a small group of friends who get into situations reminiscent of 30's screwball comedies. His third in the series, My Lucky Star, was rather weak and not as enjoyable as the other two, however.
What Happened to Mr. Forster? by Gary W. Bargar, if you can find it because it looks to be out of print, is a YA story about a young boy in 1950's Kansas who finds out his favorite teacher might be gay.

Hey Joe by Ben Neihart is a great gay YA. If your friend likes mysteries, I thought Michael Nava's Henry Rios series was really good too.
Poppy Z. Brite is also good. She always features gay protags. Her early stuff is paranormal/vampire fic, and the later stuff is more in the foodie genre, from what I hear.
I'm a few days late, but a couple I've read recently:
Basketball Jones, by E. Lynn Harris was a lot of fun. I don't usually read contemporary-ish books, but this one was quite smart and fast-paced.
I'm reading this alternate history series by Jo Walton, "Farthing" and "Ha'Penny" are the first two books. The MC is a gay detective working for Scotland Yard in an alternate post-WWII England, in which England made peace with Hitler early in the war and is becoming increasingly fascist. MC obviously has to hide his relationship with his partner. Great books and great characters.

If he's a fantasy reader, he might try Richard Morgan's The Steel Remains. It's pretty dark and gritty, and the protagonist is both gay and spectacularly badass.
