My laptop recently caught a particularly nasty virus. When i backed up my files before i erased and reinstalled, i think i lost my downloaded I-Tunes TV show files. My question is, do i have to buy the shows again that i paid for and downloaded, or will i be able to download them again without a problem?

Not certain, (I don't I-Tunes that much.) but I believe that when you log in to the ITunes store their database will show what items you've purchased. Downloading should then be a matter of individual items -- whether an item was purchased for an individual or limited availability for download. The rest you should be able to re-download.

They are part of the media you've purchased. You'll be able to redownload them again after logging in and the rest of the rigamarole.
