There are many different types of relationships between couples, especially on college campuses. The dating scripts used in the past have changed drastically over the years, and the relationships we see today are sometimes quite different from things seen a couple of decades ago. Some young couples go out on dates, but a majority seem to be trying a new form of activity called "hooking up." This new type of relationship entails some form of sexual activity, from kissing to intercourse, and is normally present only after a night of heavy alcohol consumption. Many argue that "hook up's" have replaced the typical dating scene that previously dominated college campuses.

I wouldn't say completely. They are two different things usually. Most 'hook ups' are only part of the party, serious relationships either continue from this or start far more conventionally, bumping into someone at a coffee shop, or being introduced by a friend.

I think it's simplfying the situation too much to say 'hooking up' is all college kids do these days

There was a story about this on 60 minutes once.

Having been through college...yeah, college students do that, but I don't think it's new, to be honest. There's still a perfectly good mix of dating and hooking up. And it's been a little longer since I was in high school, but not so long that I can imagine it's changed drastically, and I think dating there still dominates over plain hooking up.

Out of curiosity, (and hopefully not coming off as rude), what exactly were you trying to get across in this post?

Cheering you all on!
However, on the issue of the phrase "hooking up," it's interesting because in another group of writers we just discussed how different its meaning is now from a few years ago. When I was in high school (I'm 29), "hooking up" meant "starting to date." But now it often means "having sex." There was another use for it that I think was more complicated, that made me think that it might also have regional differences, but I can't remember what it was.

Anyway, I did get called on my use of the phrase "hooking up" for two characters who were starting to date but weren't having sex yet.

I asked my teen-aged niece about this once. She said it depended on context. You could hook up with your friends at the mall or you could hook up with a hottie at a party, or you could hook up with a hottie after the party.
