I'm procrastinating on my novel by writing and subbing short stories.

Someone please kick me and tell me that after the 3 short stories in my sig line are done, I can't write any more shorts until I finish and submit my novel! kthxbai

There's no reason why you can't write and submit short stories and still work on your novel.

Now get off your duff, sit at your desk and tell yourself, "I can't write a short story until I get *insert word count here* done on my novel." Set yourself small word count goals, but be faithful to them.

You'll be surprised how quickly those words will pile up.

Now hop to it and no more whining.

This is my specialty this week. You must work on the novel. What do you want? To be a short story writer or a novelist?

Decide and write.

Not that you can't do both, but no more of doing one and not the other. And I say the novel comes first, and if you must do a short story, it has a day of the week or a number of hours/words only.

LOL! Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I really like the idea of using shorts as a reward for hitting milestones on the novel, so I rearranged my sig line to reflect that. The first draft of the novel is already done, but since I pantsed it, I need to outline it and rewrite the whole thing. Lesson learned for me: I'm a die-hard outliner, so it's not good to mess with that on future projects. Onward!
