Wait... wasn't there a Barnabus on a TV show? Dark Shadows, I think it was.

He was the true start of vampire sympathy.

Effie, It's debatable whether or not Barnabus Collins in Dark Shadowswas a sympathetic character or not. Check out the comments regarding Jonathan Frid's character on the Dark Shadows and Barnabus Collins wiki's.

Also, if you want to see the full evil of Barnabus Collins as vampire check out the movie House Of Dark Shadows. It's violent, bloody, and definitely not a sympathetic vampire characterization. You might also want to head over to Hulu and watch the episodes there of the last mini-series that was made. Barnabus isn't exactly a sympathetic character there either (in fact, he's rather diabolical in the way he worms himself back into the Collins family's good graces and begins killing).

The TV soap opera aspects of the series made it necessary to keep certain aspects of Barnabus' personality from overwhelming the audience and making him a loathsome character hated by the audience. They did a very nice balancing act and Barnabus always seemed at war with himself as much as anything else - and he always gave in to his thirst in the end and somebody died.

I was really young when Dark Shadows was on. I don't remember much about it, but one can't forget a name like Barnabus. It took me a minute to get there by your reference LOL. I barely remember it at all.

Dan, luckily for you, my husband and his brother Daniel have different dads, which means different last names. Jeremy Collins and Daniel Shrader... you got by by the skin of your teeth.

I've cranked out 2,200 words today so far and I've decided that I'm staying awake until it's done. It's 8 pm here and I usually go to bed at 5 am so I have plenty of time. But, if it's not done at 5, I'm staying up until it is. I have plenty of coffee on hand.
