Do you think a severed human hand would float or sink if you tossed it in the water?
If it's fresh it will float initially and then sink after a short period (a day or so as I recall). After a few days underwater it will rise to the surface again.
The reason is initially gasses in the flesh will cause the tissue to float. As these gasses dissipate or dissolve out into the water the flesh sinks. As decomposition sets in the flesh again fills with gasses and rises.
It's one reason why fresh corpses thrown into lakes or rivers are often weighted down initially. Without the weight, they'd float and be discovered much sooner. It's also the reason why days old corpses are found along river banks and beaches.
Most of the previous has been gleaned from the book "Howdunit: Forensics - A Guide for Writers" just in case anybody started getting any ideas on why and how I might know some of this stuff.
I get all my info from TruTV. And true crime books. Mwhahahahahahaha! J/K I had a book on forensics written by a doctor many years ago...have no idea what happened to it, though. Good, gory stuff.
*looks down* Uuuh... you don't want my boots. They have buckles.I will say though...
GET TO WORK!!
LOL. Heck, I should be writing too. But... I'm not.
Buckles?! *restrains self from demanding photos* I am a big shoe/boot fan. Might just rip 'em off your feet before you could kick me anyway.
Thanks for the whippin'.
