There's a kind of writing you can only do after midnight.

Crazy stuff. Dangerous stuff. Fast stuff.

Anyone else writing long after midnight? Is it working for you?

I used to write too poetically at night. I would write stuff similar to something de Saint-Exupéry might have written on a bad day.

I'm trying to work out the details of a mystery story at the moment.

It's not going to be midnight for a while here, but I will probably be up and writing after that. The worst part is, I am actually a morning person and don't feel the most creative or intelligent at this time of night. I just left things until the last minute that have to get done now. Bad me!

One more hour for me, and it's almost two.

Writing is the road to madness, and I love that sometimes.

Keep on keepin' on you night owls and lost souls and deadline dreamless.

It's almost 4am here and my writing day is just winding down. It's very, very quiet. Almost too quiet...

I write my best stuff after midnight. I can't understand these mental cases who work in the morning - and by choice, too!

I am usually up at 3am to do my writing so that's either really late at night or wayyyy early in the morning, take your pick - it's the only time when I have absolute silence and can concentrate. Is it working? Yes and no... yes I am producing something (a fantasy romance as of late) but no, I am not convinced I actually like what I am writing. Hmmm... perhaps I should shelve this and try writing something else....

I write 90 % of my stuff late at night. I'm a night owl by nature (I work the night shift) and my sleeping pattern is very messed up. I find that writing my stuff--I write horror fiction--in the middle of the night is great because when i'm home the house is quiet and there are no interuptions.
On the flip side I tend to write some really dark, eerie stuff and sometimes I creep myself out with it. I think there's a little downside to writing tales of demonic possession at 2 in the morning in a dark, empty house. You find your self peeking in the closet and under the bed.

I've written two books of 100,000+ words, and both of them were done in no time. I got in a zone I still can't explain--time really didn't exist. I did get more done at night though, but probably because people are a great distraction to creativity.
ETA: The strangest think about both experiences was that as I was typing I kept thinking "I can't type this fast!" it was really strange. It probably took me ten minutes to type this post.

I find I write worse when I am asleep, so after midnight isn't very productive for me.

My brain turns to absolute mush when I'm tired. I can't write once I've crossed that point, usually around 9:30-10pm. I write throughout the day, whenever the kids are behaving well enough. I write best in the morning, but I have a system I have to follow. Get breakfast cooked, kids off to school (when it's in) husband off to work. Clean up the house. Get lunch made, other kid off to school (he was in kindergarten) talk to hubby while he's home for lunch, see him back off to lunch. Entertain the little one until she gets bored of me and if I get lucky and there are no phone calls, then I get to write. Sometimes I get to write later in the afternoon after supper time if it's quiet enough.

Thinking about all that, it's really amazing I get any writing done...

I write during the afternoon most of the time. After midnight's for playing Diablo with the other crazy nocturnal gamers. ;)

and the livin' is ea-sy
YES.

After midnight, my stuff seems to snap. It's better, wilder, scarier. Usually I end up scaring myself, so I go to bed shivering. But it reads well in the morning.

If I didn't have to work for a living ... night writing would definitely be my thing. When it's light outside, I tend to overthink everything. In the dark quiet, though, there's magic.

Hit or miss with me - and I'm more of a night person, too. I either come up with things that are cosmically brilliant or cosmically "OMFG what were you thinking when you spewed that out" horrible.

Yes. The golden hour (or three). A great time!
