:hi:
I'm submitting a short story to Canada (from the U.K.). Does anyone know what kind of postage to put on the S.A.E. for the reply?

I believe it has to be Canadian stamps - but since many of our stamps have the queen on them, perhaps the post office won’t notice that they're from the UK :)

There are International Reply Coupons for this. Participating countries have these and they are interchangeable between them. I believe UK is a member country.

From the Canada Post site:

What Is An International Reply Coupon?
to top of page

International Reply Coupons are coupons that may be purchased in Canada and other participating member countries of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). They may be sent in a letter or parcel to be exchanged by a recipient in any member country of the UPU.

The recipient can exchange one coupon for postage stamps, and if not precluded by the internal legislation of the country of exchange, for postal stationery or postal prepayment marks or impressions representing the minimum postage prepayable on an international unregistered airmail letter.

The following restrictions apply to the exchange of International Reply Coupons from other postal administrations in Canada:

* when exchanging the International Reply Coupon(s) for postage, Canada Post reserves the right to ask the Customer to immediately affix the postage directly on the item(s) to be mailed
* International Reply Coupons may not be redeemed for cash
* International Reply Coupons cannot be used for remittance purposes
* no more than 100 International Reply Coupons may be presented by a Customer at a post office in one day (limit may vary per post office)
* if the item weighs more than a standard letter or additional services are required (i.e. Registered), the difference must be paid by the sender
* if the sender asks for a commemorative stamp or stamps on which a supplement is payable in exchange for an International Reply Coupon, the sender will have to pay the supplement
* Customers must provide Canada Post with an opportunity to determine if the coupon is valid. No credit shall be given for forged or counterfeit coupons.

some agents specifically say "do not send coupons" because they still have to go to the post office to mail it and they dont want to do that. might want to check before you buy something they wont use anyway.

True.

Another thing you can do, if they do not accept coupons is exchange stamps with someone from that country. I've done that here on AW in the past. I sent $10 worth of Canadian stamps to a member here, and they returned the same amount in US stamps to me. I wasn't going to the States in the foreseeable future and I am always submitting to the States...so that is another way to do it. Worked for me.

Home - but for how long?
Have the...

Canadian PO stopped sending stamps abroad like the US have?

If not check out the Sticky About Publishing shorts at the top of this board. I know I posted the online POs of several countries there.

IRCs are very expensive and as someone mentioned they have to be exchanged at the PO and many editors don't have the time.

Trading is a good idea too

E-mail the editor of the magazine and ask if they'll reply to you by e-mail, many mags will now do this for overseas submissions.
If not, sentence them to a long wait at the post office by sending IRCs

Thanks everyone. I'll email them and check what they want. Fingers crossed they do email responses.

A friend of mine is overseas and she not only got them to respond on line, but they (PARSEC) allowed her to sub on line as well. You might save yourself stamps both ways. I think they just make special arrangements to receive the work as an attachment.
