The New Yorker fiction genre could be defined as the Updike-Cheever genre. It has its own unique set of parameters, chief among them, being written by somebody lit-trendy and famous.

They've published works that fit under Magic Realism, and at least one story they've published in the last few years was nominated for a Nebula. But, generally, they're a mainstream market.
Your local library should have a whole pile of New Yorker's available to read.
