I am almost finished reading this right now. I've seen a bit of the TV series so I am interested in how it is diff from the book. I have the first DVD disc waiting for viewing ala netflix....
The MC is Gracie. It starts out from her POV, but it isn't written in first person. As the story progresses, though, other peoples POV creeps in. At first I found it jarring and was reminded of MANY POV threads in the novel writing forum. First it is just a scene here and there from another character's POV, but she moves on as the book progresses to full on POV switches in the same scene and head hopping in the same paragraph. Am I hyper aware of this becuase of the numerous discussions here at AW, or it is really jarring. I mean, i follow it ok. (I almost typed it works, but stopped. I don't think it does....)
Sam is more developed in the book, and older. I like him better. The Sam in the show is just sort of there. We learn more about him in the book than in the show. Even though I like the development of Sam in the book over what I've seen in the TV series (which admittedly I haven't seen all of but so far...) I still would prefer the development of his character to be solely from Gracie's observation. I think. ?
In my first attempt at writing a novel I had all kinds of POV's from everyone from MC's to bit parts. Then I joined AW and read Uncle Jim and the other novel writing threads and grudgingly reduced my POV's in my story and found it to be a lot tighter.
Don't get me wrong... I am very much enjoying reading this book. I am almost done, and will probably finish tonight, but I wonder if I would like it better with only Gracie's observations? Like I said, am I noticing it becuase of writing myself, or is it really jarring. Obviously story trumps all, since I can't put it down. (*yawn* stayed up way too late reading....)
