Looks interesting. Since John Lasseter (Toy Story, etc.) is behind this one, I have good confidence it will be an original story. And I love 2D animation -- so hopefully this would be good.

But one question: It's set in New Orleans. How could there be a princess in the US?

oo-oo-ooh, looks better than i had suspected. Kinda weird that they are highlighting the fact that it took them 75 years to be able to have a black princess, but oh well. The setting looks awesome (jazz age new orleans). Disney's trying to go back to the look of its older beloved movies, rather than the slick futuristicky style they've been using recently. And I'm totally in love with Anika Noni-Rose (playing Princess Tiana) after watching her in No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency.

My friend's husband is working on promotional stills and stuff for the movie. Next time I see him I shall have to grill him on it :D

(Heard this a few months ago from someone working on the movie, don't know if it's true) So the princess is just like a wealthy African-American girl in 1920s New Orleans. The Frog Prince, Prince Naveen, is a sort of generically ethnic possibly African prince guy with an accent. So when she marries him, she'll be the princess of wherever he's from. :D

There was not, most likely. But it beats the hell out of how they were originally going to do the character, as a chambermaid named Maddie who worked for an evil rich white girl.

See, Nala was a princess, but she's not a 'Disney Princess'. 'Disney Princess' is its own marketing juggernaut: pink crap for little girls emblazoned with images of all the princesses all together. Nala is never included. Probably because she would eat the other princesses...Now that would be a good Disney movie.

There was at least one. Madame CJ Walker died in 1919, she had daughters and granddaughters and was one of (if not the) first self-made female American millionaires in history. :)

Thank god they got rid of this crap. I thought this was the stupidest thing I had heard in a long time. I remember when I first read it and I just rolled my eyes. Every flippin stereotype you could think of was mentioned in a small little write up. I couldn't believe what I had read.

The first African-American Disney protagonist was in Atlantis: The Last Empire, the first Warner Bros. Cartoon African-American protagonist was in the all-black Snow White parody Snow White and the Sebben Dwarves in 1943, one of the infamous 11 and the only time the Termite Terrace asked money for research (going to a black jazz club to know the jive)

It's nice to a see a hand-drawn-ish movie coming out of Disney.

The princess is voiced by the same actress who plays Grace on The Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency. It's funny hearing her without the African accent.
