Hello all...new to the boards

I wanted to ask my fellow writers if any of you have written a graphic novel before?

I'm in the process of turning my standard manuscript into a graphic format and I'm finding it to be a different animal than I'm used to. Is there any certain way the story is supposed to lay on the page? I mean in terms of getting the idea across to the artist.

I've been using rough thumbnails and laying it out how I see it in my head but I was curious of the usual approach.

Thanks!

During my brief foray into graphic novel scripts (abandoned when I realized how few good artists there were in comparison to writers) I didn't sketch anything out. I just wrote the script based loosely on what is sometimes referred to as the "Marvel" style of script writing.

I suppose it would depend on the artist but my understanding was that most artists preferred being able to lay out the page themselves. That could have just been the people I was working with though.

The way you write a graphic novel script depends on the artist you are writing for or company you are marketing to. Well, me I'm a control freak, so I like to describe what every panel shows and how they are positioned on the page, but some artists prefer to read the story in regular story form and some prefer the loose "Marvel" format Agg B. mentions, where the artist decides how much information goes on each page, in how many panels, and may occasionally decide to cut a scene.

In general I think comic scripting is basically the same as screenwriting/playwriting. And writing a script for a video game is also basically the same, with the addition of some dialogue trees/choices.
