So what do I do?

Most agents/publishers only want to see the first three chapters and synopsis to start with. If they're interested, they'll ask for the full ms.

would that go for screenplays too? As in only submitting the hook and a synopsis?

Yep. But it depends on your genre. You haven't said what type of book you've produced, nachonaco_Grippers, but I have to tell you that if "I don't want to waste my time and money printing several copies of the same thing" truly is your mindset, then you're probably not ready for the reality of writing. Finding an agent and finding a publisher has NEVER been a "waste of my time and money." It took many, many copies of the book to find one, but I never even questioned the cost.

And if you DO find an agent or publisher, you'll be spending a bunch MORE time and money printing copies while you're going through edits, and copy edits, and galley reviews, etc. before you see much financial return.

You need to think about this very seriously, because writing is a commitment of yourself (both time and money) to the publishing business.
