Quoting song titles?

Tiles can't be copyrighted, so you can use those. Lyrics and dialog are protected and you'd need permission.

Any movie quotes that are iconic, like "Make my day, punk" might be okay since they're now part of the cultural vernacular, but you'd have to double check those. Technically, it's still under copyright protection by the creators.

So I am going to have to contact the Star Wars people and ask to use the "I have the high ground" bit.

If you're only asking about copyright law then the answer's already been given.

But if you absolutely need them in the story then sure, I'd include them (lyrics appear in published novels all the time, duly credited of course). Your agent or publisher will advise whether or not to remove them, and/or will seek the necessary permissions.

Or, this could be reason for rejection. Especially if it's a short story rather than a novel, and a magazine editor just doesn't want the hassle.
