True but I think AZ Dawn is saying if you use Geocities sites for research or info for your stories you should make sure that's available in other ways.

I read about this a few days ago. They're giving people plenty of time, since the earliest they'd close up is this fall. Save your data. Web hosting is pretty cheap nowadays. I think one of the biggest issues will be with people who don't have a clue how to create web pages. Geocities provided a very simple Drop-and-click method for creating sites.

I think I still have one somewhere, floating around with some old fanfic on it. Guess this is my cosmic hint to remove it from the web. :)

With the way free hosts have been disappearing, I'm just wondering if Angelfire is next -- I have an old darling there, my first fractal gallery. Ah, nostalgia. It is a pain when a lot of people have linked to a site. There are still dead Fortunecity links all over the Web.

I issued a warning about Geocities last night at a site where people take grotty old fic with great seriousness (and web design with a dull spoon). I do weird things out of pity ;)

There are new free and cheap hosts all over, TG. Most of them have some kind of Hamburger Helper site building carp too.

Sorry for the thread necromancy, but I've found out when GeoCities is closing: October 29, 2009. Also, the Internet Archive is looking for GeoCities sites to put in a special colection. Those of you who can't/don't want to transfer stuff to another host, but still want it available to everyone might consider submitting their URL to it.

I have no idea geocities is still alive. I used to be on geocities... but that was over 10 years ago (1994, to be precise).

Ditto. I couldn't get access to my old geo site as I have no idea what country I was living in at the time and other such details they require. I thought it would haunt the internet for ever!

The end of an era.

My first incarnation of "The Official Homepage of Benjamin Solah" was on there, redirected from a cjb.net domain.

I'm not surprised though, given the rise of blogs as easier ways to have a basic web presence.

Christ, that brings back so many memories of when the internets weren't stupid. Okay, when they weren't AS stupid.

I didn't know it was still going all this time.

Oh, good. Now that abandoned fanfic site where my stuff is posted will finally disappear. ;)

And I'll be free of the Sailor Moon fansite I created in 1997 and lost the login information for.
