I believe its true.

He's going to be in the upcoming "Public Enemies"

as well as maybe portraying the Riddler in Batman.

Jim Carrey was the original...I think Johnny can pull it off. He did nicely as Willy Wonka, I think he can get a little crazier don't you?

Don't know about Batman, but he's playing the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's version of Alice in Wonderland.

Depp's people already debunked the rumor. Depp is on a studio wishlist, that's it. There's not even script for this thing yet, and no guarantee Riddler will be in B3.

I went to the movies tonight (total shocker - I left the studio (apt) and it wasn't on FIRE!) and saw the trailer for "Public Enemies" - looks awesome! And Marion Cotillard is in it! Very excited... but lets face it, I've been to my one movie per year already...

Man, I get sick of Johnny Depp being precast as every possible role in upcoming films.

Johnny Depp is overrated. There, I said it. Leave him out of my Batman films, please.

BTW, I see you are new, so welcome!

I think he would be great as the mad hatter in a Tim Burton version of Alice in Wonderland, as the riddler in a Batman movie...I dunno, I must say Im skepticle but as I always say, Ive been known to be wrong on many occasions :)

Actually, Frank Gorshen (http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0000179/) predates Carrey by almost 30 years and seemed to be something of an inspiration for Carrey. There was a 1943 series for Batman, but I haven't seen it, so I'm not sure if the Riddler was in it or not, so Gorshen might be the first actor in the part.

I've heard speculations that Coleman Reese (the character in The Dark Knight) was set up to be the Riddler.

If so, then the Riddler won't be a major character. No doubt someone with star power will be cast as the main antagonist.

Heath Ledger didn't really have "star power."

He had Brokeback Mountain, but that didn't really give him "star power."

I'm with James. At this stage in the game, Nolan could cast a rock as the next villain and people would show up in droves. He has the luxury really of casting whomever he wants, the studio will let him do anything.

Besides, Liam Neeson, Heath Ledger, names to be sure, but neither are exactly Brangelina (hmm there's an idea, they are the ultimate evil . . .).

Nope! Depp's been cast in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Pretty obvious he would be really . . . http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1014759/

 I'm having (bad) visions of Tom Petty's video of "Don't Come Around Here No More".

I love these books. I shudder to think what Burton will do to them. I like Burton, mostly--I think he can be brilliant. But... Alice? Ouch. It's so easy to emphasize the dark in the books as opposed to the surreal or the clever wordplay.

I agree, and it's especially obvious when they call him "Mr. Reese" throughout the film. MR. REESE - MRREESE - MYSTERIES.

I think Depp is a brilliant actor. I do know what you mean with the rumour mill always trying to connect him with every project out there.

What will be interesting about introducing The Riddler in the current Batman series is how they'll tone down the campiness of the character as we've seen from Gorshin and Carrey. Heath Ledger was superb in portraying a non-cartoonish Joker, I think they have to do the same with the Riddler. Depp is more than capable of pulling off something like that, methinks.

With that said, with the recent Sweeney Todd and the upcoming Mad Hatter roles, Depp will have done 'looney' a bit much recently to take on another 'psycho' role. I think I'd like to see someone else as The Riddler, such as the actor who played the Coleman Reese character as James pointed out. It would be a star-making role for a relatively unknown actor with talent.

Actually no, that'll be Jude Law.

ETA: Ah, no, sorry, just checked it out on imdb. They've now replaced Law with Seth Rogan. My bad.

I heard they were giving that role to Leonardo DiCaprio actually.

Thing about it is, we aren't even sure that they are going to CAST the riddler at all in this movie. Everybody seems to think that that's the villain they'll cast (probably because the Riddler seems to be the next likely interesting villain of the known big screen representations of Villains.

Personally, I think Nolan and Crew are going to cast a villain we haven't seen onscreen yet. In my mind, I see the most likely villain being The Black Mask w/ a small possibility that they'll bring Catwoman back just because with Rachel gone, they'll need a new female lead. I wouldn't be surprised, however, if it's not Harley Quin (seeing as how she hasn't made it to the big screen yet).

Good point. It's inevitable the Riddler will show up, but will he be next?

Harley Quinn would make sense with the Joker's demise in the last film.

(why not a couple of the "brute" characters like ClayFace or KillerCroc, even another attempt at Bane)
