Oh well, just when I thought I had a handle on what the market wanted, out of the blue comes Bonnet Books, low G-rated love stories set in the Amish countryside. Humility, plainness and no sex, who would have thought. Barnes and Noble says, according to the latest issue of Time Magazine, that sales are particularly strong in Amish areas. And here I am, having lost the vampire initiative and thought to strike with pirates, and comes the Amish, which I don't know a blessed thing about.

Wow! Talk about a niche market.

On the other hand, they're not likely to forsake books for the Kindle any time soon...

Smcc, I wouldn't sweat the lack of Kindle sales. Indeed, in the Christian fic market, bonnet books sell to folks with cell phones, plasma TVs, Blackberries, and every other hi-tech toy you could name.

Bonnet books are identified by the cover: it Must Have a woman in a transparent bonnet (one wonders what was the point? the hair can still be seen) looking down. If she's looking up, even without the bonnet, it is not a true Bonnet Book.

I myself want to see the cover with plainly dressed maiden ripping off said bonnet, throwing her arms in the air, and laughing to the sky. But then, I'm known to be bad.

There are some in Christian fic that would like to see fewer, not more, bonnet books, but my lips are sealed about who they are. Not me, of course.

There are lots of Amish around here, and when they are young, many of them raise hell. Check out a documentary called Devil's Playground. One of the kids in that movie becomes a drug dealer before returning to the fold.
