Has anyone here had any luck getting a story accepted by Tin House? On Duotrope, not one person has reported an acceptance, and certainly the quality of the stories is quite strong. I've also heard rumors that they pay quite well.

Am I deluded to even bother submitting my first story for publication to such a competitive journal? I'm just finishing up a piece that I could see fitting very well with an upcoming theme issue of theirs, but if I submit there I can't submit to my second-choice journal (which will not accept simultaneous submissions) until I receive a rejection (if that's the case). Should I submit anyway and just hope for the best? Or shoot for a more realistic journal and the get the validation of publishing my first story?

When I submit, I always try to get the most out of it. The most money, the most prestige, the most satisfaction, etc. So you'll have to make a choice. Do you like your first choice enough to pass on your second choice market? If there is a viable third and fourth choice, you can try the hard sell, if not you might want to try an easier sell first.

There are several reputable journals that have a 0% acceptance rate on Duotrope.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think these stats come Duotrope members who use the online submission tracker (which is probably a comparatively small cross-section short story writers).

As far as holding off on the sub, what Stijn said.

I also thought of submitting to Tin House for the Hope/Fear issue. Looks intriguing!

Good Luck to you.

Ahh, I think it's a total crapshoot. The stories in Tin House are really, really strong. But on the other hand, aim high, right? It's not like most stories will expire if you spend an extra 6 months querying because you started with the wrong journals. The rejections could be discouraging, but then, a professional-level sale would be worth the risk. (Also.. the extra time to sell my first story might give me more motivation to keep writing new stories!)
