What movie captures the essence of what you want your writing to be?

If you took the definitive work that you've written, or have yet to write, what movie would capture its soul? Obviously, the plot would be different, etc..

I watched The Blade Runner again tonight, and I don't know if it's Sean Young or Vangellis, but I'd love to write a book that made people feel like that movie makes me feel. What's yours?

Slumdog Millionaire.

It's dark, but it also has these beautiful, blinding bits of hope and light. I went through a whole huge spectrum of emotion during that movie. I loved it.

I want my books to make me feel like Twilight did. Twilight is not the favorite of many, I understand, but I thought the movie was wonderful in a strange way and I would be appreciative of my writing if it became that way.

I am also close to the Saw movies because they capture many raw emotions. I want to be read in a way that the Saws are watched. Am I making sense?

Dark, moody, gritty material. Something like Lord of the Flies or The Island of Doctor Moreau--for the morality message. I need something with tons of character movement, scene changes, cross-country chases, alien environments. Jurassic Park appealed to me in this way. I love survival stories--man against nature and overcoming merciless odds. I wrote a contemporary Journey to the Center of the Earth tale, and just fell in love with it.

I love post apocalyptic stories, too. Like Blade Runner, the Omega Man.

But I sure wish I had written Logan's Run for some strange reason. (Might be the ex-cop in me.

For diversity of characters and survival--the Road Warrior.

Actually, I'd have to say Love Actually or Notting Hill. I love groups of friends and families who love each other and try to struggle through together. A great supporting cast captures me.

Except that, in both cases, the original novels are better than any of the movies made from them. That isn't always the case, by the way (Forrest Gump, To Have and Have Not come to mind).

Any period-piece classic Masterpiece Theater series production from several decades ago (Poldark, as one example) or film perhaps directed in the style of Merchant-Ivory for my novel, Rocamora set in 17th century Spain.

For my contemporary thriller-horror novel, A Gathering of Vultures, all Hitchcock until the end, which requires current special effects. As an aside, his choice for ending The Birds would have been better and more chilling imo.
